Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Paprikás Csirke)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil or lard in a large pot. Add onions and cook until soft and lightly golden.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the paprika.
  3. Add chicken, garlic, tomato, and bell pepper. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth, cover, and simmer gently for 35–45 minutes, until the chicken is tender.
  5. Remove the chicken and keep warm.
  6. Mix sour cream and flour in a bowl. Whisk in a few spoonfuls of the hot cooking liquid.
  7. Stir the sour cream mixture into the sauce and simmer gently for 3–5 minutes, until slightly thickened.
  8. Return the chicken to the pot and coat with the creamy paprika sauce.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Serving

Serve hot with Hungarian nokedli (dumplings), egg noodles, rice, or crusty bread.
